Do and Don'ts Of Color Use on Your Website
The first thing that most people see on most objects are the color of something, when you shop for clothes it is more the color of an item than the style of item that may make you buy an article of clothing. Even buying a car the color is the most important feature to some people. We are drawn to colors that are bright and warm. Colors that give life, colors show that you really have put your thoughts into something.
The same thing can be said of the use of color on your website. Think about how many times you went to a website and the colors were either boring or too dark? Did you stay on that site or did you bounce from it because the colors were not your style. There are more people that would leave a website if the colors were dark, the colors say a lot of people and they say a lot about websites. So when you are deciding on your color scheme there are some Do's and Don'ts of choosing a color scheme,
DO
Take a few minutes and learn the color wheel. There are basically three primary colors on the color wheel Red, Blue and Yellow. You use these colors in combination with other colors to create colors like green, purple and orange, these are considered secondary colors. When you mix secondary colors with primary colors you get combination colors such as yellow-green, blue-green and yellow –orange.
Colors have what are called temperatures; there are cool colors like blue and purple to warm colors like red and yellow. There are also high intensity colors and those are more bright and vivid colors. You want to have colors that are attractive to people, a website is like wearing an outfit, if the site looks good then more people will look at you.
DON'T
Miss understand the basic rules of the color wheel. The majority of colors look wonderful when combined with different shades of intensity. These styles of schemes are called Monochromatic. You should remember with colors that opposite colors do attract Complementary Colors. Another don't is do not choose colors like black and yellow together, some people think that a black background and yellow words is nice but they are not. The words are hard to read and the overall scheme is not that attractive.
Keep in mind that colors may look different on your site than they do on paper. Choose a colors based on color schemes that are provided online, this way you can really get a good idea of what your site is going to look like. Lighter colors appear lighter when they are surrounded by darker colors but you don't want to have an all black background just to get a bright yellow or red.
Talk to your web designer and graphic designer and discuss with them the colors that you are thinking and with their experience they can tell you what colors they think will work well with your site and which colors to stay away from. You want a website with inviting colors that will keep customers coming back for more.
